Bible Verses: Genesis 1:17-19 (ESV-English Standard Version)

An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. The goal for The Beginning series is to memorize Genesis 1:1-2:3. This passage tells the story of creation. At two verses a week, it should take 17 weeks to memorize this passage, but you can work faster if you wish.

Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.

(Verse 17) And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,
(Verse 18-19)  to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.

(Verse 17)  And ___________ set them in the expanse of the heavens to give ___________ on the earth,

(Verse 18-19) to rule over the ___________ and over the night, and to separate the ___________ from the darkness. And ___________ ___________ that it was ___________. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth ___________.

Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.

Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.

(Verse 17)  And ___________ set them in the ___________ of the ___________ to give ___________ on the ___________,

(Verse 18-19) to ___________ ___________ the ___________ and ___________ the ___________, and to ___________ the ___________ from the ___________. And ___________ ___________ that it was ___________. And there was ___________ and there was ___________, the ___________ ___________.

Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.
