Creation Stories--Independence Day at Tallgrass

Ronda

Revelation 14:7 says to worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water. Creation Stories posts are all about worshipping our Creator. One thing that I am learning is that when life gives you a gut punch, the only cure is to look to our Creator. There is only one solution that I have found for depression and pain and misery, and that is to look away from our unhappiness and up to God. These posts are my attempt to draw your attention away from yourself and up to Jesus.

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Luke 12:6-7)

Independence Day Reflections

Transcript of Video: July 5, 2019–Tallgrass

My favorite 4th of July was spent by myself, yet I was not alone.  I decided to spend the hour before sunset at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.  It’s one of my favorite places in the whole world.  On this occasion when everyone was in town preparing to watch fireworks, the park was almost deserted.  The songs of the birds surrounded me as I walked on the path just before sunset. The purple thistles were full of little bugs pollinating them and grasses of various kinds formed the backdrop as birds perched on the tall stems. One bird was divebombing another bird and making a strange fluttering noise when it got close to the other bird. No humans were around, except for myself and one other couple I passed on the trail, but the prairie didn’t care as its life swooped and buzzed and called in a performance better than any theater or display of fireworks.

God has created a whole system of life that carries on without you and me.  The animals and plants do not worry about whether we are there to observe them or not.  We are irrelevant to their choices and activities, except for when we get in their way.  In fact, most of the time they are irrelevant to us, but neither they nor we are irrelevant to our Creator.  Jesus said “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows”  (Luke 12:6-7).  Just because we do not observe God interacting with nature does not mean that He set up the earth’s ecosystem and then just left it running on automatic pilot as He turned His attention to other matters.  He is there with every bee buzzing from flower to flower.  He sorrows in every death.  He cares about the birds, but even more He cares about me.  No, I was not walking alone on the prairie that day, my Creator was with me.
