Bible Verses: Genesis 1:11-12 (ESV-English Standard Version)

An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. The goal for The Beginning series is to memorize Genesis 1:1-2:3. This passage tells the story of creation. At two verses a week, it should take 17 weeks to memorize this passage, but you can work faster if you wish.

Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.

(Verse 11) And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so.
(Verse 12)  The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.

(Verse 11)  And ___________ said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding ___________, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their ___________, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so.

(Verse 12) The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding ___________ according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their ___________, each according to its kind. And ___________ saw that it was good.

Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.

(Verse 11)  And ___________ said, “Let the ___________ sprout vegetation, ___________ ___________ ___________, and fruit trees ___________ ___________ in which is their ___________, each according to its kind, on the ___________.” And it was so.

(Verse 12) The ___________ brought forth vegetation, ___________ ___________ ___________ according to their own kinds, and trees ___________ ___________ in which is their ___________, each according to its kind. And ___________ saw that it was good.

Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.

(Verse 11)  And ___________ said, “Let the ___________ sprout ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________, and ___________ trees ___________ ___________ in which is their ___________, each according to its ___________, on the ___________.” And it was ___________.

(Verse 12) The ___________ brought forth ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ according to their own ___________, and trees ___________ ___________ in which is their ___________, each according to its ___________. And ___________ saw that it was ___________.

Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.

(Verse 12) ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________. ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.
