Bible Verses: Genesis 1:7-8 (ESV-English Standard Version)

An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. The goal for The Beginning series is to memorize Genesis 1:1-2:3. This passage tells the story of creation. At two verses a week, it should take 17 weeks to memorize this passage, but you can work faster if you wish.

Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.

(Verse 7) And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so.
(Verse 8)  And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.

(Verse 7)  And God made the ___________ and separated the waters that were under the ___________ from the waters that were above the ___________. And it was so.

(Verse 8) And God called the ___________ Heaven. And there was ___________ and there was ___________, the second day.

Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.

Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.

(Verse 7)  And ___________ ___________ the ___________ and ___________ the ___________ that were ___________ the ___________ from the ___________ that were ___________ the ___________. And it was so.

(Verse 8) And ___________ ___________ the ___________ ___________. And ___________ was ___________ and ___________ was ___________, the ___________ ___________.

Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.

(Verse 7)  ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________. ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.
