Bible Verses: Genesis 1:5-6 (ESV-English Standard Version)

An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. The goal for The Beginning series is to memorize Genesis 1:1-2:3. This passage tells the story of creation. At two verses a week, it should take 17 weeks to memorize this passage, but you can work faster if you wish.

Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.

(Verse 5) God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
(Verse 6)  And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.

(Verse 5) God called the ___________ Day, and the ___________ he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the ___________ day.

(Verse 6) And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the ___________, and let it separate the ___________ from the ___________.”

Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.

(Verse 5) ___________ called the ___________ ___________, and the ___________ he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the ___________ ___________.

(Verse 6) And ___________ said, “___________ there be an expanse in the midst of the ___________, and ___________ it separate the ___________ from the ___________.”

Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.

(Verse 6) And ___________ said, “___________ there be an ___________ in the ___________ of the ___________, and ___________ it ___________ the ___________ from the ___________.”

Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.

(Verse 5) ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________. ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________.

(Verse 6) ___________ ___________ ___________, “___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.”
