Bible Verses: Genesis 1:1-2 (ESV-English Standard Version)
An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. The goal for The Beginning series is to memorize Genesis 1:1-2:3. This passage tells the story of creation. At two verses a week, it should take 17 weeks to memorize this passage, but you can work faster if you wish.
Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.
(Verse 1) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
(Verse 2) The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.
(Verse 1) In the ___________, God created the heavens and the ___________.
(Verse 2) The ___________ was without form and ___________, and ___________ was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the ___________.
Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.
(Verse 1) In the ___________, God ___________ the ___________ and the ___________.
(Verse 2) The ___________ was without ___________ and ___________, and ___________ was over the ___________ of the deep. And the Spirit of ___________ was hovering over the ___________ of the ___________.
Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.
(Verse 1) In the ___________, ___________ ___________ the ___________ and the ___________.
(Verse 2) The ___________ was ___________ ___________ and ___________, and ___________ was over the ___________ of the ___________. And the ___________ of ___________ was ___________ over the ___________ of the ___________.
Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.
