Memorizing Bible Verses: Romans 8:38-39 (ESV-English Standard Version)

An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. I recommend that you focus on these two verses every day for a week before going on to the next two. My goal is that you will memorize all of Romans chapter 8. There are 39 verses, which would take you about five months at the rate that I am suggesting. Some people can memorize more rapidly, and that is great, but as I have grown older, I have difficulties with memorization, so I have set a slower pace so that those of you who have memory issues like I do will not feel discouraged.

Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.

(Verse 38) For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
(Verse 39)  nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.

(Verse 38)  For I am ___________ that ___________ death ___________ life, ___________ angels ___________ rulers, ___________ things present ___________ things to come, ___________ powers, who justifies.
(Verse 39)  ___________ height ___________ depth, ___________ anything else in all ___________, will be able to separate us from the ___________ of God in Christ ___________ our Lord.

Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.

(Verse 38)  ___________ I am ___________ that ___________ ___________ ___________ life, ___________ ___________ ___________ rulers, ___________ ___________ present ___________ ___________ to come, ___________ ___________, who justifies.
(Verse 39)  ___________ ___________ ___________ depth, ___________ anything ___________ in all ___________, will be able to ___________ us from the ___________ of ___________ in Christ ___________ our ___________.

Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.

(Verse 38)  ___________ I am ___________ that ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ rulers, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ to come, ___________ ___________, who ___________.
(Verse 39)  ___________ ___________ ___________ depth, ___________ ___________ ___________ in all ___________, will be ___________ to ___________ us ___________ the ___________ of ___________ in ___________ ___________ our ___________. __________ any ___________ ___________ .

Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.
(Verse 38)  ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________.
(Verse 39)  ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________. __________ ___________ ___________ ___________ .

Final Step: Try saying the verses without blanks: Romans 8:38-39.
