Memorizing Bible Verses: Romans 8:35-37 (ESV-English Standard Version)
An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. I recommend that you focus on these two verses every day for a week before going on to the next two. My goal is that you will memorize all of Romans chapter 8. There are 39 verses, which would take you about five months at the rate that I am suggesting. Some people can memorize more rapidly, and that is great, but as I have grown older, I have difficulties with memorization, so I have set a slower pace so that those of you who have memory issues like I do will not feel discouraged.
Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.
(Verse 35) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
(Verse 36) As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” (Verse 37) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.
(Verse 35) ___________ shall separate ___________ from the love of ___________? Shall tribulation, or ___________, or persecution, or famine, or ___________, or danger, or sword?
(Verse 36) As it is ___________, “For ___________ sake ___________ are being killed all the day long; ___________ are regarded as ___________ to be slaughtered.”
(Verse 37) ___________, in all these things ___________ are more than conquerors through ___________ who loved ___________.
Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.
(Verse 35) ___________ shall ___________ ___________ from the ___________ of ___________? Shall tribulation, or ___________, or ___________, or famine, or ___________, or danger, or ___________?
(Verse 36) As it is ___________, “For ___________ sake ___________ are being ___________ all the ___________ long; ___________ are regarded as ___________ to be ___________.”
(Verse 37) ___________, in all these ___________ ___________ are more than ___________ through ___________ who loved ___________.
Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.
(Verse 35) ___________ shall ___________ ___________ from the ___________ of ___________? Shall ___________, or ___________, or ___________, or ___________, or ___________, or ___________, or ___________?
(Verse 36) ___________ it is ___________, “For ___________ ___________ ___________ are being ___________ ___________ the ___________ long; ___________ are ___________ as ___________ to be ___________.”
(Verse 37) ___________, in ___________ these ___________ ___________ are ___________ than ___________ through ___________ who ___________ ___________.
Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.
(Verse 35) ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________? ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________?
(Verse 36) ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, “___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________; ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.”
