Memorizing Bible Verses: Romans 8:25-26 (ESV-English Standard Version)
An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. I recommend that you focus on these two verses every day for a week before going on to the next two. My goal is that you will memorize all of Romans chapter 8. There are 39 verses, which would take you about five months at the rate that I am suggesting. Some people can memorize more rapidly, and that is great, but as I have grown older, I have difficulties with memorization, so I have set a slower pace so that those of you who have memory issues like I do will not feel discouraged.
Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.
(Verse 25) But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
(Verse 26) In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.
(Verse 25) ___________ if we ___________ for what we do not yet have, we ___________ for it ___________.
(Verse 26) In the same way, the ___________ helps us in our ___________. We do not know what we ___________ to pray for, but the ___________ himself intercedes for us through wordless ___________.
Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.
(Verse 25) ___________ if we ___________ for ___________ we do not ___________ have, we ___________ for ___________ ___________.
(Verse 26) In the same ___________, the ___________ helps us in our ___________. We do ___________ know ___________ we ___________ to ___________ for, but the ___________ himself ___________ for us through ___________ ___________.
Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.
(Verse 25) ___________ if ___________ ___________ for ___________ ___________ do not ___________ have, ___________ ___________ for ___________ ___________.
(Verse 26) ___________ the same ___________, the ___________ ___________ us ___________ our ___________. ___________ do ___________ know ___________ ___________ ___________ to ___________ for,___________ the ___________ himself ___________ for us ___________ ___________ ___________.
Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.
(Verse 25) ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.
(Verse 26) ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________. ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.
Final Step: Try saying the verses without blanks: Romans 8:25-26.
