Memorizing Bible Verses: Romans 8:17-18 (ESV-English Standard Version)
An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. I recommend that you focus on these two verses every day for a week before going on to the next two. My goal is that you will memorize all of Romans chapter 8. There are 39 verses, which would take you about five months at the rate that I am suggesting. Some people can memorize more rapidly, and that is great, but as I have grown older, I have difficulties with memorization, so I have set a slower pace so that those of you who have memory issues like I do will not feel discouraged.
Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.
(Verse 17) and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.
(Verse 18) For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed toward us.
Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.
(Verse 17) and if ___________, then ___________; ___________ of God, and joint ___________ with Christ; if indeed we ___________ with him, that we may also be ___________ with him.
(Verse 18) For I consider that the ___________ of this present ___________ are not worthy to be ___________ with the ___________ which will be ___________ toward us.
Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.
(Verse 17) and if ___________, then ___________; ___________ of ___________, and joint ___________ with ___________; if ___________ we ___________ with him, that we ___________ also ___________ ___________ with him.
(Verse 18) For I ___________ that the ___________ of this ___________ ___________ are not ___________ to ___________ ___________ with the ___________ which will ___________ ___________ toward us.
Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.
(Verse 17) and ___________ ___________, then ___________; ___________ of ___________, and ___________ ___________ with ___________; ___________ ___________ we ___________ with ___________, that we ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ with ___________.
(Verse 18) For ___________ ___________ ___________ the ___________ of ___________ ___________ ___________ are ___________ ___________ to ___________ ___________ with the ___________ ___________ will ___________ ___________ toward ___________.
Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.
((Verse 17) ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________; ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________; ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.
(Verse 18) ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.
Final Step: Try saying the verses without blanks: Romans 8:17-18.
