Memorizing Bible Verses: Romans 8:11-12 (ESV-English Standard Version)

An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. I recommend that you focus on these two verses every day for a week before going on to the next two. My goal is that you will memorize all of Romans chapter 8. There are 39 verses, which would take you about five months at the rate that I am suggesting. Some people can memorize more rapidly, and that is great, but as I have grown older, I have difficulties with memorization, so I have set a slower pace so that those of you who have memory issues like I do will not feel discouraged.

Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.

(Verse 11) If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
(Verse 12)  So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.

(Verse 11)  If the ___________ of him who raised ___________ from the dead ___________ in you, he who raised Christ ___________ from the dead will also give ___________ to your ___________ bodies through his ___________ who ___________ in you.
(Verse 12)  So then, ___________, we are ___________, not to the ___________, to live according to the ___________.

Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.

(Verse 11)  If the ___________ of him who ___________ ___________ from the ___________ ___________ in you, he who ___________ Christ ___________ from the ___________ will also give ___________ to your ___________ ___________ through his ___________ who ___________ in ___________.
(Verse 12)  ___________ then, ___________, we are ___________, ___________ to the ___________, to ___________ according to the ___________.

Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.

(Verse 11)  ___________ the ___________ of him ___________ ___________ ___________ from the ___________ ___________ in ___________, he who ___________ ___________ ___________ from the ___________ will also ___________ ___________ to your ___________ ___________ ___________ his ___________ ___________ ___________ in ___________.
(Verse 12)  ___________ then, ___________, ___________ are ___________, ___________ to ___________ ___________, to ___________ ___________ to the ___________.

Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.

(Verse 11)  ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.
(Verse 12)  ___________ ___________, ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________, ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________.

Final Step: Try saying the verses without blanks: Romans 8:11-12.
