Memorizing Bible Verses: Romans 8:9-10 (ESV-English Standard Version)
An important part of keeping God’s word in your heart and having it available for when you need to quote it to fight against the devil’s temptations is to memorize scripture. There are many ways to do this including singing verses, using pneumonic devices, and old-fashioned look and don’t look as you try to say the verse. Here is a technique that I learned from memverse.com. Try it out and see if it works for you. I recommend that you focus on these two verses every day for a week before going on to the next two. My goal is that you will memorize all of Romans chapter 8. There are 39 verses, which would take you about five months at the rate that I am suggesting. Some people can memorize more rapidly, and that is great, but as I have grown older, I have difficulties with memorization, so I have set a slower pace so that those of you who have memory issues like I do will not feel discouraged.
Step 1: First read or sing or chant the verses several times.
(Verse 9) You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
(Verse 10) But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Step 2: Now try saying the verses with words missing.
(Verse 9) You, ___________, are not in the ___________ but in the ___________, if in fact the ___________ of God dwells in you. ___________ who does not have the ___________ of Christ does not ___________ to him.
(Verse 10) ___________ if Christ is in you, ___________ the ___________ is dead because of ___________, the ___________ is life because of ___________.
Step 3: Try saying the verses with more words missing.
(Verse 9) You, ___________, are ___________ in the ___________ ___________ in the ___________, if in ___________ the ___________ of ___________ dwells in you. ___________ ___________ does ___________ have the ___________ of ___________ does ___________ ___________ to him.
(Verse 10) ___________ if ___________ is in ___________, ___________ the ___________ is ___________ because of ___________, the ___________ is ___________ because of ___________.
Step 4: Try saying the verses with even more words missing.
(Verse 9) ___________, ___________, are ___________ in ___________ ___________ ___________ in ___________ ___________, if in ___________ ___________ ___________ of ___________ ___________ in you. ___________ ___________ does ___________ ___________ the ___________ of ___________ does ___________ ___________ to ___________.
(Verse 10) ___________ ___________ ___________ is in ___________, ___________ the ___________ is ___________ ___________ of ___________, the ___________ is ___________ ___________ of ___________.
Step 5: Try saying the verses with only blanks.
